What is PRP?
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is a noninvasive treatment that uses a patient’s own blood to improve the appearance of skin and hair. It can be used to treat wrinkles, acne scars, and hair loss.
Treatments May Be Used to Address
- Skin Rejuvenation
- Hair Restoration
Skin Rejuvenation
- Skin Texture: PRP can improve skin texture, reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and plump hollow areas
- Acne Scars: PRP can help smooth acne scars
- Pigmentation: PRP can help with pigmentation issues (i.e melsama, sun damage)
- Photoaging: PRP can protect skin from photoaging caused by ultraviolet (UV) rays
Hair Restoration
- Male Pattern Baldness: PRP can help with male pattern baldness
- Hair Growth: PRP can stimulate hair growth for thinning hair or alopecia when injected into the scalp
How PRP Works
- A small amount of blood is drawn from the patient
- A centrifuge separates the platelets from the rest of the blood
- The platelets are then injected into the skin or scalp. They may also be applied topically during microneedling. Injecting PRP into the dermal layer or microneedling is also commonly referred to as a “vampire facial.”
- The platelets release growth factors that stimulate collagen production and cell growth over time.
Platelet-Rich Plasma treatments are safe because they use the patient’s own blood. The results are not permanent and may require 3 or more series of injections to achieve desired results. The results are seen over weeks to months.
For more immediate results, PRP can be injected along with Hyalurionic acid dermal fillers. For an added skin rejuvenating boost, PRP can be combined with other biostimulatory agents (Radiesse, Sculptra) also commonly referred to as a “liquid facelift.”
